High Spirits (DVD)

high-spirits-illusHigh Spirits is a silly movie with a variety of ghosts, real and pretend.

The bad news:  The ghosts are generally silly.  The story is ridiculous, involving a haunted castle and romance between this world and the other side.

The good news: There are numerous interesting references to different kinds of ghosts and related Irish folklore.

It’s also fun…. dated fun, but fun nevertheless.

Daryl Hannah, Peter O’Toole and Steve Guttenberg star in this film about an Irish castle hotel that’s on the brink of financial collapse.

Hotel owner O’Toole’s solution is to dress up the staff as ghosts and advertise the hotel as one of Ireland’s most haunted castles.

From ridiculous banshees to silly mummies on rollerskates, the “ghosts” don’t fool any of the American guests.  They’re so skeptical, when real ghosts appear, the tourists laugh.

This strangely entertaining movie is largely fluff with a surprising pedigree:  It was written and directed by Neil Jordan (Interview With the Vampire).

Co-stars include Beverly D’Angelo, Jennifer Tilly, Peter Gallagher and Liam Neeson.  (The latter may not thank me for mentioning his early role in this film.)

High Spirits is usually on Amazon’s list of top ten most popular movies set in Ireland.

If you can rent this movie or buy it for a few dollars, it’s worth seeing, especially if you’re fascinated with ghosts and Irish folklore.

Otherwise, look for it on cable TV.

Note: Most of the scenes won’t scare anyone except very small children.

Rating: ★★½☆☆
