Complete Idiots Guide to Ghost HuntingThe Complete Idiot’s Guide to Ghosts and Hauntings, by Tom Ogden.

Rating: ★★½☆☆

  • Nicely summarizes the basics.
  • Details and locations can be very wrong.
  • Okay for beginners, less useful for experienced ghost hunters.

This book has earned some horrible reviews for inaccurate details. However, I’ve yet to find a book that gives a more complete overview of ghost hunting.

If you want a crash course in ghosts, this is a good place to start.  Skim the book, learn the terminology, and read the parts that really interest you.  It’ll give you the general idea of how ghost hunting really works.

Don’t take this book seriously. Don’t rely on his location details.  But, to get a quick education in ghost hunting, this is a fine book for beginners.

Ghosts by Dr. Kevin Ross Emery is an intriguing video filmed at one of his workshops.

(Don’t expect a very formal presentation or top-level video quality. You’re watching this for its content, not for entertainment.)

As a professional ghost hunter, I’m always interested in others’ research in this baffling, spiritual field. We’re constantly looking for new leads and fresh answers.

In this video, Kevin Emery shares a variety of stories from his own paranormal encounters.

Dr. Emery (a New Age minister) and I disagree on several points, especially about certain sites (and whether they’re haunted or not).  We also use some terms very differently.

However, I think it’s important to consider alternate views about hauntings, whether I agree with them or not.

In this DVD, information can be useful for beginners and he suggested some research angles that hadn’t occurred to me before.

If you’re serious about ghost research and want insights into all possibly relevant views, see if your public library has a copy of this video.

If you are sympathetic to ghosts and you’d like to help them “cross over,” this workshop may be especially useful and inspiring.

Also, if you’re working with a variety of clients and you want to understand New Age attitudes towards ghosts, this video may provide important insights.

It’s a good, not great video. Kevin has been a personal friend for over 10 years. We disagree on many things, but his presentation in this workshop is worth considering, and Kevin brings a different slant to working with ghosts.

Brandywine Valley Ghosts by Laurie Hull

Rating: ★★★½☆

This is a fun book to read whether you’re a ghost hunter or someone who enjoys real ghost stories.

REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Chilling, true ghost stories
  • Good tips for ghost hunters
  • An entertaining book for all readers

Ms. Hull is the kind of ghost hunter and author that I admire. In this book, she mixes well-researched history, chilling ghost stories, amusing anecdotes, and first-person encounters with ghosts. There’s something for every ghost enthusiast.

This book features many photos. Some are excellent, and I’d question others. In a way, that’s typical of ghost research; no two people will get excited about the same photos. In fact, if I see too many startling photos, I question their integrity. This book seems to include a good balance of convincing, eerie and, “Well, maybe…” photos.

I especially like the stories in which Ms. Hull explores sites that have quirky folklore. Her visit to the Ticking Tomb is a wonderful anecdote. As preposterous as some ghost stories are, they’re always worth checking in person. Her experience is classic.

This is an ideal book if you like to read true ghostly encounters.

It’s also an excellent travel guide if you’d like to visit haunted places in southeastern Pennsylvania. Ms. Hull has even included a chapter about local, haunted bed-and-breakfasts. (My “gut feeling” is that Kennett House — in Kennett Square, PA — is worth staying at for a couple of nights.)

Some people are good ghost researches. Others are good writers. In Brandywine Valley Ghosts, Ms. Hull proves that she is both. My harshest criticism of this book is that it wasn’t long enough. I wanted more stories. The variety and personality in each chapter kept me turning the pages.

I look forward to reading additional books by Laurie Hull, and I hope that she’s working on another one right now.
